Exploring Differential Equations through the Body
A collaboration between the Emory Dance Program and the Math Department
Lori Teague & Manuela Manetta
Mathematics and dance are usually perceived as two distinct and unrelated disciplines, and it is doubtful one has imagined these two words together in the same sentence.
But, in reality, movement and mathematical thinking are components of the same building blocks- time and space.
In fact, even though dance is usually associated with expressiveness and math with rationality, they both share the qualities of rigor and creativity.
It is not hard to recognize how fear and inhibition often surround these subjects, especially for those students who are less familiar with them. We hope to build confidence in math and dance through the experiential approach of our project.
